Who we are
BeWelly is a meal-planning service for households, at bewelly.co.uk. It is being set up as a company, BeWelly Ltd, which is in the process of registration. Until then, BeWelly is run by its founder, who is responsible for your personal information.
For anything about your privacy, including the requests below, email privacy@bewelly.co.uk.
What we collect
- Your account: your email address, your name, and the identifier our sign-in provider gives your account.
- What you add: recipes, recipe photos, notes, meal plans, shopping lists, and your household, including who you invite to it.
- Your calendar, if you connect it: the calendar link you give us, and the events we read from it to show on your meal plan.
- Health and body information, if you choose to add it: your weight; the height, age and sex used to work out a calorie target; and activity, sleep and nutrition data you send from Apple Health.
- Technical information: a sign-in cookie, and the basic records our servers keep of each request, such as your IP address and the page requested.
Why we use it
| Purpose | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Running your account and the features you use, including sharing with your household | Providing the service you signed up for (contract) |
| Storing and showing your health and body information | Your explicit consent, which you give by adding it and can withdraw by deleting it |
| Keeping the service secure and working, and fixing problems | Our legitimate interest in running a safe, reliable service |
We do not sell your information, use it for advertising, or show it to anyone outside your household.
AI features
Some features use AI provided by Anthropic: importing a recipe from a photo or a web page, generating or varying a recipe, checking nutrition figures, and the meal-planning chat. When you use one, we send Anthropic only what that request needs, such as the photo, the recipe text, or your message and your recipe library. For the meal-planning chat that also includes this week's plan, the weather forecast, and the times of your calendar events with whether they look like eating out, but not their titles. We use Anthropic's commercial API, whose terms do not allow your information to be used to train its models.
Who we share it with
We use these providers to run BeWelly. They process your information only on our instructions.
- Auth0 (Okta) handles sign-in. Your account is held in its UK region.
- Amazon Web Services hosts the service and stores your information, in London.
- Anthropic provides the AI features above, in the United States.
- Open-Meteo supplies the weather forecast on the meal plan. If you allow your browser to share your location, your browser sends it to Open-Meteo directly; it does not come to us.
- Google supplies the fonts on our pages, which means your browser sends your IP address to Google when a page loads; and runs our email, if you write to us.
Where information goes to the United States, it is protected by contractual safeguards approved for transfers from the UK.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account is open. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your information from the live service; copies in our backups are overwritten as those backups expire, and are only ever used to recover the service. Information you added to a shared household, such as recipes, stays with that household for its other members.
Cookies
We use one cookie, which keeps you signed in. It is essential for the service, so it does not need your consent. Your choice of light or dark theme is saved in your browser and never sent to us. We do not use analytics or advertising cookies.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- give you a copy of your information, including in a format you can take elsewhere;
- correct anything that is wrong;
- delete your information, or stop or limit how we use it;
- stop using your health information, by withdrawing your consent.
Email privacy@bewelly.co.uk and we will reply within one month. If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
Children
BeWelly is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly hold their information.
Changes
If we change how we use your information, we will update this notice and the date at the top, and tell you in the app before any significant change applies.
